Today is World Penguin Day 2017 – a day dedicated to the flightless aquatic bird.
While some species of penguin flourish, others are dwindling in number due to changes to their natural habitat.
The date itself – April 25 – coincides with the annual northward migration of penguins (they migrate by waddling rather than flying) and is usually marked with jokes, wearing black and white (lol) and eating Penguin chocolate bars (probably).
On a more serious note, the idea is to raise awareness of the plight of some penguins and about protecting the Antarctic’s marine environment.
There’s usually lots of discussion about this on social media, including on Twitter with the hashtag #worldpenguinday.
